"What?" He said as he followed me off the deck and toward the gate at the other end of the yard.
"Mama wants us to go to the store. Wanna come?"
"Sure. Havilah you know Papa told us to wear shoes when we go out."
I looked at my happy little feet scuffing up dust. Nope, not gonna happen. I'm sixteen, I thought rebelliously. Anyway if people ask me why I don't wear shoes I'll just tell them that I refuse to obey Papa's rule and he won't get in trouble.
No shoe can match the lovely sensation of the ground as your feet conform to it. Thank God for them, and for the way he lets me walk.
"Let's go the long way."
We went the long way.
