Leon, Havilah and I went to the orphanage Wednesday via public transportation. When we came in I attempted to communicate why we were there. We were told that the director would be in shortly. We decided to go to the Feria across the street and come back. The vendors were tearing down so we got some great deals on lettuce, cutie oranges, peppers, corn and lemons.
When we came back to the orphanage the woman we had spoken to wasn't there. Three others were there who weren't expecting us and didn't speak a work of English. It took us a while to communicate to them in Spanish. Eventually they understood that we had come to work for them and the children for a couple hours. They took our names and phone number and then sent us upstairs to the youngest babies. On one hand I was relieved to be sent to the babies but on the other hand, I knew the older children needed our love too.
We held, fed, and talked to the little babies until it was time to go. It was very difficult for Leon. It's hard to explain why this is so hard for us. The minutes drag by like hours. It seems like we aren't doing anything important at all and we feel like idiots almost the whole time we are there.
Every time a baby rolled over onto a toy and began to cry we were there to comfort him. The little 5 month old got held for almost two hours and the others had eyes to stare into and responses to their coos. I knew that these things were very important to their development and their ability to love a Mama and Papa some day if they get adopted.
This orphanage seems to be a very good one. I think that the children are loved and well cared for. We would like to find an orphanage where we are needed more. Where are the little Levina's and Leyehnah's that lay crippled and alone all day. I know that they are here in Chile, somewhere. I know that Leon would like to find an orphanage situation that is close by that we can spend more time in and where older children would benefit from music. Havilah and I will probably continue visiting the children in this orphanage I don't know if anyone else comes to play with the 2 and 3 year olds.
The next day we celebrated Elsie's 3rd birthday. We gave her 2 little dolls from La Feria and Naphtali found a little black cat stuffed animal on the street to give to her. He was so excited.
Today we met another midwife. She is supportive of natural home birth and speaks English very well. She is optimistic that she will be able to find a midwife to deliver our baby in our home. This is very good news for us.
We have a show on Monday. There is a group of Chileans that need love and smiles so we were asked to come and play for an hour. We better start writing songs in Spanish.
